I often Wonder too..

Good morning and I wish you a pleasant Sunday. I noticed that fewer churches preach salvation these days. Many Pastors are more or less motivational speakers except many don’t even advice the flock to do the actual work but wait for “miracles “. Kind of like how thise church mummies after 30 years of no child deliver quadruplets and they shout up and down miracles, but they really did IVF which I believe is of God. But they mislead the rest of the congregation to keep praying and even charge to pray for them etc.

Let’s talk about Freeze’s post below…

Do we go to church because of promises of a better earthly life in Nigeria? Or for Salvation?

I stopped attending pentecostal churches a while ago- I just go to the older school ones baptist – when I lived in Dubai, Anglican most other times and now Catholic thanks to marriage. I am Anglican by orientation as I am yet to convert and I am in no way insinuating the Anglican church is much better, but I am yet to hear outright prosperity preaching in an Anglican church.

  1. I’m catholic. A very traditional catholic for that matter. Most people are uncomfortable with the Catholic Church bcos it teaches you to sort of embrace suffering, discomfort and poverty. Some catholic priests these days are trying to preach prosperity…but it’s not the catholic way (to be truthful, most do it bcos they feel that’s what people want to hear and to raise money for their parishes)

I had a period in young adulthood where I went to different churches to choose for myself where I wanted to be, I like penetecostal pastors such as paul adefarasin and poju oyemade (they’re more of motivational speakers to me though). late pastor bimbo odukoya’s preaching helped me make the ultimate decision in choosing my spouse, her book- 195 questions to ask…I also read my bible like crazy during this period.

That being said, after my gallivanting I went back to the catholic Church. That’s where I seem to find my salvation…I realised that I found God in quiet, solemn prayers and hymns and I love their teachings.

  2. The thing about Christianity in Nigeria is pretty sad.

Many go to church for “miracles”.

You don nothing but want prosperity. These self acclaimed pastors are not helping.

Why do churches need to put up expensive posters/banners to host a program. (not concerts, as that is understandable).

Just regular church programs and they take up adverts spaces worth Millions of naira. ( I personally think churches should be taxed).

Why is there a need for pastors pf churches to own private jets, schools, etc…
Why do churches need to build mega-edifices for worship. (Yes in the old testament God’s temple /alter was built with the finest materials).

The differnce now is in the “motive”.
Why do pastors need body guards brandishing guns?…

So many questions. The gullibility of Nigerian Christians is sad.

Poverty brings many ti God; but the god they seek

Poverty brings many to God; but the god they seek is different from the God in the bible.
