The head of Indonesia’s anti-drugs agency has proposed building a prison island guarded by crocodiles to house death-row drug convicts.

Budi Waseso said crocodiles often made better guards than humans – because they could not be bribed.

He said he would visit different parts of the Indonesian archipelago in order to find the fiercest reptiles.

Indonesia has some of the toughest drug laws in the world and ended a four-year moratorium on executions in 2013.

“We will place as many crocodiles as we can there,” Mr Waseso was quoted as saying by local news website Tempo.

“You can’t bribe crocodiles. You can’t convince them to let inmates escape.”

The plan is still in the early stages, and neither the location nor the potential opening date of the jail have been decided, the AFP news agency reports.

This might not be such a bad idea for Nigeria – maybe gaurding customs as they are the worst government agency in Nigeria. Police are mild compared to customs. We can also use them to guard political prisoners.

  1. I know sometimes it is often difficult to effect a needed change in a short period of time but still the value of life shouldn’t be compromised upon. The ills in a society are a reflection of the prevalent values of that society and values don’t change easily. Enlightenment about the dangers about a perceived ill through TV adverts, print and online media, educational programs hosted by opinion leaders, constructive systems and structures to rid the society of such ill/menace often have a better and wholesome effect. If the leaders can understand that somehow the prevalent crimes in any society are instigated by that same society (because nobody is born a criminal), perhaps they can look for solutions that can really tackle the root source of the problem and not invent draconian measures that only tackle the symptoms of the problem.
