I dont think we get taught the meaning of love as young girls or adult females. I am going to touch on love from my own perspective and at least to me the things love isnt.
Love isnt Cinderella nor is it the Disney princess fairy tale stories. Love isnt the big wedding where you have 15 bridesmaids all decked out in vera wang and you have on a $20,000 dress. Love isnt when your friend doesnt consider how their actions and words affect you. A mans willingness to marry you is also not an indication of love.
The bible as far back as it was written addresses the issue of love in 1st corinthians 13 verse 4 to 7:
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres”.
I am not a bible thumper. I am a practial christian. While no one is perfect, look for signs of the above at least 75% of the time in your human relationships and you will find out who loves you (the applied mathematician in me reasons in numbers). Note I didnt say those who love you will never fail you, but it helps you avoid toxic human relationships in the name of this elusive love.
Truth is love is basic. And when you start justifying how you love a man who brings home stds, God didnt say love at your own expense. Jesus died on the cross for our sins, God hasnt asked you to be a sacrificial lamb for any other human being. You hear young women who get beaten on a daily basis by their boyfriends who they marry and you hear them say but I love him, it is his way of showing he loves me.
Well the bible says it. Loving relationships are nuturing ones.
